Nostradamus, the 16th century French astrologer who many have considered a prophet, is said to have written of three antichrists. Those who interpret his writings to be true predictions say the first was Napoleon, the second was Hitler and the third is someone yet to appear who would come from the east. There has been chatter on the Internet since Putin invaded Ukraine that he is the one Nostradamus foresaw. While I personally do not put stock in such notions, many do, so I reached out to famed New Orleans psychic Madame Sophia LaRoque.
“Michel de Nostredame wrote many of the things that are attributed to him,” said Madame LaRouque, “but so many others are forgeries that studying him properly is hard work indeed!” She went on to say, “He was an astrologer, and an apothecary who some in that day called doctor. He could not really claim that title as he had been expelled from University of Montpellier for being an apothecary. That was forbidden for students learning about what was called medicine at the time. All doctors really did back then was let blood and kill their patients, so apothecaries were more deserving of the title.”
“As for being a prophet, he wrote to King Henry II of France that he was not someone with supernatural power to see the future, but a reader of signs that all could see if they knew how to look. He considered it a kind of mission to repeat what those of the classic age and middle ages had written, so their wisdom would not be lost to the world, yet many think he was the originator of their words.”
I asked her to provide some examples, and she gave names such as Titus Livius, Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, Jean Froissart and a book known as Mirabilis Liber. She also said that Nostradamus wrote in a cryptic manner to avoid running afoul of the church for witchcraft or heresy. This has led to some outrageous interpretations of things he did write.
“People say that Nostradamus predicted Hitler, the Second Antichrist. This is the quatrain they are obsessed with.” She presented me that, first in his original French, then in English translation:
Bestes farouches de faim fleuues tranner; Plus part du champ encontre Hister sera, En cage de fer le grand fera treisner, Quand rien enfant de Germain obseruera.
Beasts ferocious from hunger will swim across rivers: The greater part of the region will be against the Hister, The great one will cause it to be dragged in an iron cage, When the German child will observe nothing.
“Darling, Hister is not a misspelling of Hitler, it is the Latin name for the Danube river!” I was not aware of that. She then talked about the Napoleon quatrain.
Vn Empereur naistra pres d'Italie, Qui à l'Empire sera vendu bien cher: Diront auec quels gens il se ralie, Qu'on trouuera moins prince que boucher.
An Emperor will be born near Italy, who will cost the Empire very dearly. They will say, when they see his allies, that he is less a prince than a butcher.
“While that could describe Napoleon Bonaparte, it also could apply to many other awful men. Nostradamus wrote of things near to his own time, not to ours, and of places near his home of France, not of the New World. As for the third yet to come? There are many quatrains that have been taken that way, and many men purported to be him. Let us look at a few.”
De l'aquatique triplicité naistra, D'vn qui fera le Ieudy pour sa feste: Son bruit, loz, regne, sa puissance croistra, Par terre & mer aux Oriens tempeste.
From the three water signs will be born a man who will celebrate Thursday as his holiday. His renown, praise, rule and power will grow on land and sea, bringing trouble to the East.
“The line about Thursday being a holiday might refer to a ruler’s birthday, but Putin was born on a Tuesday: October 7, 1952. I don’t think this is about Putin.”
Le prince Arabe Mars Sol, Venus, Lyon Regne d'Eglise par mer succombera: Deuers la Perse bien pres d'vn million, Bisance, Egypte ver. serp. inuadera.
The Arab Prince Mars, Sun, Venus, Leo, The rule of the Church will succumb by sea: Towards Persia very nearly a million men, The true serpent will invade Byzantium and Egypt.
“Many who talk of a third antichrist cite this as the man from the east. I see nothing here that could be about Vladimir Putin. Some have said that this final tyrant will be called Mabus.”
Mabus plustost alors mourra, viendra, De gens & bestes vn horrible defaite: Puis tout à coup la vengeance on verra, Cent, main, faim quand courra la comete.
Mabus then will soon die, there will come Of people and beasts a horrible rout: Then suddenly one will see vengeance, Hundred, hand, thirst, hunger when the comet will run.
“I see no parallels to Putin here. Like I said before, Michel de Nostredame wrote for his own time and place. Many before the turn of the millennium were terrified of a quatrain that mentioned 1999, but it did not come to pass. His number was a symbol for something else.”
L'an mil neuf cens nonante neuf sept mois, Du ciel viendra vn grand Roy d'effrayeur: Resusciter le grand Roy d'Angolmois, Auant apres Mars regner par bon-heur.
The year 1999, seventh month, From the sky will come a great King of Terror: To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols, Before and after Mars to reign by good luck.
She went on to say that since the invasion of Ukraine is failing to go as he planned, Putin could not possibly be the third antichrist of Nostradamus. He just is not that significant. He is a tyrant and a monster, but not one who threatens the world’s very survival. He is only one who dreams of bringing back a long dead empire. He will go down in history as one of very many madmen who aspired to rule the world, but failed.
